I've often been frustrated by this sort of thing in the past.
I should point something out, just to be fair..
Some department stores work more like a market than a shop, with individual stalls by different companies running them. The stalls are quite separate from each other. In that case I don't they would or should know about the other stalls, certainly not the ones on other floors. They don't work for the same company.
HOWEVER, general common sense would suggest you pick something up on one floor and could try it on another. I am sure they would have let you in, it would have been very unreasonable for them not too.

See thats when I dont have the time to wait in a queue. I would have gone and looked if I didnt find and empty (or less waiting timed) line Iwould have just left... I find more and more that shop assistants just dont have a clue when you ask them about what they may or may not have in the shops!

ohhh sounds like the resistance to want to smack her would be heavily weighing on my hand :) I HATE when nothing fits, kinda like when you HAVE money to spend at the mall, ya never find ANYTHING you want. TYPICAL!

Was it a department store? I've had similar experiences...where the person that works in one section has no clue about another, because it's 'not their section'. Heaven forbid they can provide some customer service and find out something if they don't know the answer, rather than leave the customer to fend for themselves!
